# Rate limits

> Per-key rate budgets on the Explorer API and the 429 response.

Each exchange key carries its own requests-per-minute budget, set at issue. Default is **120 requests/minute**, adjustable per key from 1 to 6,000. A short-burst allowance (about a tenth of the per-minute budget over 10 seconds) smooths bursts.

## The 429 response

```json theme={"system"}
{"code":"too_many_requests","message":"Too many requests — slow down or sign in for a higher budget"}
```

Response headers on limited calls:

| Header | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `Retry-After` | Seconds until you may retry. |
| `X-RateLimit-*` | Budget and remaining allowance where the route exposes it. |

When you see `429`, wait `Retry-After` seconds — don't hammer. Sustained 429s mean you're over your budget; contact Bluprynt to raise `rateLimitPerMinute` for your key.

## Designing around the budget

* Poll with `nextCursor`/`since` rather than re-reading full pages — most polls return empty or a few items.
* Batch: the `item` filter on [monitoring changes](/api/explorer/watchlist-monitoring) takes up to 25 asset ids per call.
* Cache `GET /me/watchlist` server-side; it changes only when you change it.
* Spread calls evenly. A 120/min budget is 2/second — burst spikes trip the 10-second allowance even when the minute budget is fine.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Are limits per key or per route?">
    Per key, across all key-callable routes. `/health` and `/openapi.json` aren't key-gated and don't consume your budget.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I see my current usage?">
    Check `X-RateLimit-Remaining` on responses where exposed; otherwise count your own calls.
